Artist Biography

Jonathan Lane was educated in the UK at Chelsea School of Art and graduated from Brighton University, 1998.

a fragile world, London 09

The natural world is my reference point; the more I consider it, the stronger my faith in the continuity of life becomes, and the stronger my vision in paint. I gather information about it in order to expand my art, meditating, disentangling and re-arranging in order to invent, simplify and clarify - focusing, for example, on a passage of closely-observed foliage, progressively adjusting integral values using sketches and photos - until I arrive in my mind at the 'essential' composition. My aim is not to comment: I leave that to my paintings.

Like nature, the paint medium is a symbol of anguish and hope. It is capable of stripping both subject and viewer to an elemental state. This is what I strive to achieve in my own work, without dogma or trends to lead me. Painting for me is an intuitive and intimate exploration, which has led me to various approaches and subjects - some now rejected, some that have left their mark and others offering a way forward.

Maiden Voyage

An artist boards a train in Paris, one of a a growing number that carry him to and from the object and source of love in his life, and now it is a new departure. This is the maiden voyage of Eurostar to his home town of London, a touchstone of what went before and a new beginning. Hurtling through a landscape of ideas and creation, surrounded by bored businessmen and women, propelled by a cleaner power that requires no effort of one's own, being part of a new connection as he and Britain reach out to a wider world. A door that opened for him in the light and enlightenment and wonder of Fez - where he met her and took a fresh direction. On track. Heading some place.
